Estate Planning & Probate

Service Overview

Estate planning is one of the most important legal investments a New Yorker can make for their family's future. A well-drafted will, properly funded trust, and clear powers of attorney can help families avoid years of court proceedings and disputes. When a family member passes away, navigating the New York probate process — through Surrogate's Court in your county — requires specialized legal knowledge.

Dial4Law connects New York residents with independent, licensed estate planning and probate attorneys who handle NY estate law. Our network includes attorneys experienced in will preparation, estate tax planning, trust administration, probate litigation, and elder law.

Whether you're planning ahead for your family or dealing with the loss of a loved one, Dial4Law shares your case with a network attorney typically within 2 hours during normal business hours.

The Final Result

New York has its own estate tax with a much lower exemption than federal law. For dates of death from January 1, 2026 through December 31, 2026, the New York basic exclusion amount is $7,350,000 (adjusted annually for inflation). New York also has a "cliff" provision — estates that exceed 105% of the exclusion amount may be taxed on the entire estate rather than only the excess. Proper New York estate planning addresses minimizing taxes, avoiding probate delays, and protecting your family from disputes.

Dial4Law's matching service is free. Many estate planning attorneys offer flat-fee packages for standard wills and basic trust planning, while probate matters are often billed hourly or based on estate complexity. Your matched attorney will explain their fees before you commit. Communications with Dial4Law are not attorney-client privileged.
